Surely Sardinia is a paradise for beach holidays, but Italian's second largest islands (after Sicily) offers not only a 1,150 miles long coast line with the most beautiful beaches and coves but also a lot of places of interest in the back country.

Spread all over the island there are about 7,000 Nuraghe ruins, some of them like the UNESCO world heritage Su Nuraxi, Santu Antine, Losa, Is Paras and Genna Maria in good conditions and surely worth a visit.

These pre-historical stone fortress constructions were built from Bronze Age to 238 BCE. And some of the impressive ancient statues named Giants of Mont'e Prama with a height up to 2,5 m and found near Cabras in the 1970s are displayed in the Archeological Museum of Giovanni Marongiu in Carbras and in the National Archeological Muesum in Cagliari.

Other sights which are worth a visit are the caves and caverns of Sardinia, find in the following the most important ones: Neptune's Grotto near Alghero (by boat or on foot), the grottos Su Mannau, Is Zuddas and San Giovanni in the south-west, the stalactite caves Ispinigoli (near Dorgali) and Su Marmuri (near Ulassai) and the grotto Bue Marino (only by boat) on the east coast.

Please remember when you go underground that the temperature in the caverns is around 16 degrees Celsius and that the ground is often wet, so we recommend to wear a jumper and appropriate shoes.
