Arbatax

The hamlet of Arbatax on the eastern coast of Sardinia with its little harbour belongs to the town of Tortoli. Arbatax has about 5.000 inhabitants and makes part of the province of Ogliastra. Tortoli has an international airport which especially in summer connects the island with the European continent. Olbia in the north is about 160 km and Cagliari in the south is about 130 km away.

The name of Arbatax derived from the Arabic Arba at Ashar which means 14 towers and refers to the nearby saracen tower. The town's landmark are the red rocks nearby the harbour where in summer takes place on of the biggest concerts, The Rocce Rosse, of the island.

The region is not only known for the long and fine sandy beaches but also for its inland – a fact which is not surprising considering that the Province of Ogliastra is one of the most mountainious of Sardinia.

In addition the province is rich at archeological sites like pre-historical chamber tombs (Domus de Janas) and buriel chambers (Tombe dei Giganti) and the fascinating Nuraghe, megalithe buildings from a distinctive culture dating back before 1000 BC.
