Map of region
Tortolì, situated on the eastern coast of Sardinia, is one of the capitals of the Province of Ogliastra (the other capital is Lanusei) and has about 10.000 inhabitants. The comunity has a small international airport which connects the island especially in the summer months with the mainland. Olbia in the north is about 170 km and Cagliari in the south is about 140 km away.
The hamlet of Arbatax with its little harbor belongs to Tortoli and is famous for the “Rocce Rosse”, the fascinating porphyry red rock formation near the harbor.
The region is not only known for the long and fine sandy beaches but also for its inland – a fact which is not surprising considering that the Province of Ogliastra is one of the most mountainious of Sardinia.
In addition the province is rich at archeological sites like pre-historical chamber tombs (Domus de Janas) and buriel chambers (Tombe dei Giganti) and the fascinating Nuraghe, megalithe buildings from a distinctive culture dating back before 1000 BC.
