The town of Castelsardo on the north coast of Sardinia is one of the main holiday destinantions of this region and part of the Province of Sassari. It is located about 32 km in the north from Sassari and about 32 km in the east of Porto Torres, one of the main ferryboat harbours of the island.

Castelsardo was founded in the XIIth century by the Genovese family of the Doria. Worth a visit ist the old part of the town with its castle and its cathedral situated on the hill which dominates the modern part of the town.

The typical handicraft of the region are baskets made of palm leaves. Some examples can be admired in the Museo dell Intreccio Mediterraneo in the old town.

PLACES TO GO

A beautiful coast road passing by the beaches of Platamona Lido connects Castelsardo with Porto Torres.
