Whether you are building sand castles on the beach, dip in crystal-clear water, visiting caves or going to admire the fascinating landscape and the Nuraghic culture, Sardinia is one of the best holiday destinations for families with toddlers and children.
The holiday island in the Mediterranean offers a lot of activities between the sea and the mountains and at least from the beginning of June to the end of October (and maybe even in November), warm sea water and pleasant air temperatures with plenty of sunny days. So the best solution for fun holidays for the children and a lot of relax for the parents.
What do you need for a perfect family vacation?
Those who travel with children know that planning and organization in advance are very important to enjoy stress-free family vacation. We recommend to plan not to complex trips and to think about some short breaks and activities and attractions for your children.
Of course, the accommodation is one of the important factors for perfect holidays. Popular with families are surely comfortable seaside holiday homes and villas where the beach can be reached quickly. But children also need space. Maybe the house should have two or more bedrooms? Better with a garden or a playground nearby? Sometimes an accommodation, even if it is not directly by the sea but surrounded by nature and in a quiet position, can be more suitable.
The most beautiful beaches in southern Sardinia: Pula and Chia
If you stay in the south- west of Cagliari, between the small town of Pula and the popular holiday resort of Chia, you can enjoy a lot of beautiful and child-friendly beaches. Don’t miss the sandy beach of Santa Margherita di Pula: it is ten kilometers long (!) and offers several bays and longer stretches that are separated by rock formations and cliffs. Other nice beaches are Cala Bernardini, and near Chia, Su Guventeddu, surrounded by a shady pine forest, where you can also have a picnic, and Su Giudeu and the bay of Cala Cipolla.
The best family accommodations between Pula and Chia
The holiday home Chiara with garden in Santa Margherita di Pula offers 5 bedrooms and is therefore a good solution for two families. It is located by the sea, just 200 meters from a long sandy beach that is suitable for children. There are supermarkets, bars and restaurants nearby.
The most beautiful beaches in the west, between Buggerru and the Costa Verde
The west coast of Sardinia is famous for being the wildest and most unspoilt. This should not deter families, on the contrary. Because the southwest offers a lot of activities and is not overcrowded. We particularly recommend two beaches, Funtanazza and Cala Domestica.
The Funtanazza beach is also steeped in history: in fact, this place was once a summer colony for the miners’ children who worked in the area and lived in the Sartori marine colony. To this day there is only one abandoned building that needs to be renovated. Funtanazza beach is suitable for children for two reasons: the low sandy bottom and the crystal clear sea. The coast is bordered by cliffs covered with thick vegetation that protect the beach from the mistral wind.
Cala Domestica near Buggerru is a dream bay and is initially reminiscent of a Norwegian fjord, which is framed by Mediterranean vegetation. A large sandy beach plunges into one of the most beautiful seas in Sardinia. The seabed is low and sandy and rich in underwater life. Here, the most adventurous children, equipped with a mask and a snorkel, can swim with lots of small fish all afternoon and become excellent divers! The beach is easy to reach thanks to an access path and has ample parking, a rest area for campers and a bar.

The holiday home Oasi di Scivu is suitable for a beach holidays amidst nature. With a large lawned garden, this villa offers its guests one of the most romantic views of the sea of Scivu. Not far away is Buggerru and the beaches of Scivu, Portixeddu, Porto Paglia and Cala Domestica. The Piscinas sand dunes can be reached easily by car.
The east coast between Arbatax and Orosei
The east coast of Sardinia is fascinating and varied: long sandy beaches alternate with high and steer cliffs. Numerous bays, which are definitely worth a visit, can be reached only by boat from the sea. Particularly child-friendly are the beaches of Bari Sardo, Marina di Orosei, Berchida and Bidderosa.
The beach at Torre di Barì in Bari Sardo is beautiful. The sea is transparent and the beach, which is traditionally divided into two parts, is covered in the north with golden, coarse-grained sand and in the south with pebbles and fine, white sand. You can rent sunbeds and parasols, there are parking spaces and diving schools.
Berchida is considered one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. There is also a beach service and sometimes, much to the delight of the children, cows come by to relax, too: A real natural paradise.
The Bidderosa Oasis consists of five bays with a lot of Mediterranean vegetation. Access to this nature park is limited, so it is better to register in advance to visit this beachon the east coast.
