Short trips and getaways in Sardinia, Cagliari is always worth a visit
Cagliari, located on the south coast, is a still quite unknown holiday destination in Sardinia on the otherwise well-known island. The town offers a bustling nightlife besides culture, museums and many attractions and a mile-long sandy beach, which is not far away from the center and easily reached by public transportation. Here you can still dive into the sea, take place in one of the bars sipping a cappuccino, or simply relax with a long beach walk.
Culturally Cagliari offers a lot: a walk through the historic castle district or the picturesque Villanova quarter is a must as well as a visit of the terrace of the Bastione San Remy, which allows a great view of Cagliari, or the Teatro Lirico opera with its recently opened Parco della Musica.
In the Castello district in Piazza Arsenale is based the museum complex Cittadella dei Musei, whose modern architecture is a successful venue for the display of different collectionst: In the Museo Archeologico Nazionale visitors can admire Neolithic and early Bronze Age artefacts and miniatures. Who is not afraid of hights, should definitely climb the two towers called Torre del Elefante and Torre di San Pacrazio, overlooking the city. And who wants to know how it looks in the underground, should visit the museum of Sant’Eulalia with its stunning excavation site.
Anyone interested in plants, should visit the Botanical Garden, the Orto Botanico in Via Sant Ignazio da Laconi: on a roughly 2-acre area, there is a dense palm grove, a medicinal herb garden, a cactus greenhouse and a open space with lots of tall-growing succulents, cooling fountains and many benches that invite you to relax.
All in all, Cagliari, with its Mediterranean flair is an ideal holiday destination: you can immerse yourself in a diverse culture, enjoy the traditional Sardinian and Mediterranean cuisine, try excellent red and white wines, relaxing on the beach and of course do shopping in the pedestrian zones.
