Visit with us: Visit the Artisan Fair in Mogoro

sardinian handicrafts

If you are on holiday in Sardinia in September and have booked a beautiful holiday house or a sea-side hotel in the south or on the west coast, but also want to enjoy something else than just the beautiful sandy beaches, then we recommend to visit the Artisan fair in Mogoro, the so-called “Fiera dell Artigianato Artistico della Sardegna“. In this exhibition you can admire (and buy!) traditional Sardinian handicrafts and fine arts and its modern and very interesting interpretations.

Fine crafts and fine art made in Sardinia: from tradition to innovation

Mogoro with more than 4,000 inhabitants is located about 60 km northwest of Cagliari and about 30 km southeast of Oristano and can be reached quickly on the highway SS131. Every year in August, this artisan fair takes place in Mogoro and allows Sardinia’s artisans to present their beautiful products in a well organized exhibition. Some crafts are made in the traditional Sardinian style whereas othes are a modern interpretation and more innovative.

The visitors can admire on three levels skillfully presented  jewelery made of gold, silver or coral, traditional knives, high-quality and often embroidered linen and wool clothing, fancy handbags, the most diverse textiles for pillows and tablecloths, hand-woven carpets and embroidered wall hangings, basket work and of course ceramics, glasses and last but not least furniture made of wood and metal. Of course, this exhibition features also eno-gastronimic products: Sardinian wines, craft beers, cheese, ham and sausage, honey, olive oil, tuna, bottarga and herbs are presented in a small side room and offered for sale.

What to see in Mogoro: prehistoric nuraghi and delicious wines

Morgoro is known for the production of fine Sardinian carpets and elaborate tapestries, and there are numerous weaving mills in the area that preserve and develop this traditional handicraft. Together with viticulture and agriculture, the carpet production is one of the economic cornerstones of the town and its surroundings.

After the fair in Mogoro, you can visit either the prehistoric nuraghe Cuccurada, which is about 5 km away, or the Mogoro wine cooperative, which is located just near to the highway SS131. The Cantina Il Nuraghe offers high-quality red and white wines and liqueurs, mainly made from the grape varieties Bovale, Monica di Sardegna and Cannonau.
