The unspoiled and fascinating south-west coast of Sardinia with its two inhabited islands Sant’Antioco and San Pietro, easily reachable from the island’s capital Cagliari, is still unknown as a holiday destination in Sardinia. This time we will talk about Sant’Antioco, anyhow the 4th largest Italian island after Sicila, Sardinia and Elba.

Visit the southwest of Sardinia and discover the beautiful island Sant’Antioco
With a surface of about 110 sq km Sant’Antioco is the fourth largest Italian island after Sicily, Sardinia itself and Elba. The coast of Sant’Antioco is varied with its sandy beaches and coves and rocky cliffs (for example the dark ones of the Nido dei Passeri on the west coast) and therefore the ideal place not only to enjoy the sun and the clear sea water but also to exercises oneself in diving, sailing and kite and wind surfing.
Recommended beaches are Cala Lunga, Porto Sciusciau, Porto della Signora, Spiaggia Grande, Salina and Cala Sapone. Spectacular is the steep coast of Capo Sperone in the south of the island.
Apart from the beautiful seaside Sant’Antioco offers also archeological and cultural sites worth a visit: The main sights are the Punic necropolis and the Phoenician-Punic tophet (type of sacrificial cemetery), an archeological museum which collects the archeological artifacts found on the island, the fortification Su Pisu and the surprising Byssus museum (Byssus are the filaments created by mollusks, by which they can attach themselves for example to hard substrates).
We recommend to visit the wine cellars of the Cantina of Calasetta and the Sardus Pater at Sant Antioco, which offers not only very good red and white wines in bottles, but also a type of house wine for 1-2 Euro per liter.
