Culture & traditions: Museum of traditional masks in Mamoiada

carnevale centro ovest sardegna

The small town of Mamoiada in the heart of Sardinia is famous for its traditional carnival in January: Here the two main protagonists, the Mamuthones and Issohadores, wear typical dark wooden masks and have to accomplish during the cortege a nearly dancing ritual. The heavy bunch of bells on the back of the Mamuthones is shaken and creates a strange noise which is very impressive.
