Local tips
The approximately 50 Km long Costa Verde, a still virtually unknown land on the southwest coast of Sardinia, is famous for its unspoilt and wild nature.
Next to the dense Mediterranean vegetation you find a rugged coastline with cliffs, vast dunes (among the largest in Europe) many sandy beaches and small hidden bays with crystal clear water.
In the south of the Costa Verde are the bizarre rock formations of
Capo Pecora and the fine sandy beach of Scivu that are worth a visit.
Further north you have
Piscinas, with its extensive and up to 50 mt high sand dunes, which are among the highest in Europe.
The Costa Verde's area was once renowned for its mining production activities, however, the mines closed in the 1960s and 1970s.
Near Scivu and Piscinas is the abandoned mining village of Ingurtosu.
Not far away you can visit the old lead and zinc mines of Montevecchio and Piccalinna: These areas are now considered as real monuments, forming part of Geomineral Historic and Environment Park of Sardinia.
Last but not least are the
caves of Su Mannau near Fluminimaggiore, they are among the most ancient in the world.
