Gallura - Olbia Tempio (OT)

The Gallura region is located on the north-east of Sardinia. Some of the most important sea resorts of the island, like the Costa Smeralda (Emerald coast), the Costa Paradiso or the Maddalena Archipelago, belong to this region. The coast stretch of the Gallura is cliffy with alternating coves and sandy beaches and offshore islands like Maddalena, Caprera, Tavolara and Molara.

The landscape is characterized by a Mediterranean vegetation, cork oaks, illex and bizarre wind blown granite rocks like the Capo Testa formation and the Capo d'Orso (Bear Rock). The most important coastal towns of the Gallura are Olbia, Palau, S. Teresa di Gallura and La Maddalena whereas Arzachena and Tempio di Pausania, the centre of the Sardinian cork industry par excellence, are located inland. Corsica, the french island, is only 12 km in the north of S. Teresa di Galura.

While the coast with its sea resort is nowadays well known as a holiday destination the inland remains still an insiders' tip: the mountain formation of the Monte Limbara and archeological sites like the prehistoric giant's grave and Nuraghic fortifications are worth a visit, just as the small town of Tempio Pausania with its characteristic stone houses and the village of Berchidda with its wine museum and the annual festival Jazz in Time

Also a white wine is called after this region, namely the dry and delicate Vermentino di Gallura.
