Iglesias - Carbonia Iglesias (CI)

Iglesias has about 28.000 inhabitants and is located about 60 km in the west of Cagliari in the south-west of Sardinia in the province of Carbonia-Iglesias. Iglesias was in the past one of the economical centres of mining and mining sites of the Sulcis-Iglesiente region.

Arriving at Iglesias one shall visit the centre with its narrow lanes, the cathedral and the Gothic church San Francesco. The nearest long and sandy beach is at Funatanamra about 14 km away.

Worth a visit a trip along the coast from Iglesias to Nebida and then in direction to Buggeru. Passing Masua one has a beautiful panoramic view onto the white islet rock Pan di Zucchero which is about 130 m high.

Other place to go are the islands Sant Antioco (reachable by the car aver an isthmus) and San Pietro (by ferry boat from Portoscuso and Calasetta). We recommend also to explore some abandoned mines with guided tours, for example the cave of Santa Barbara.

Who wants to go trekking shall drive northwards on the road SS 126 and turn left after several km in direction of San Benedetto. After some km on a crushed rock road one arrives at the parking place of the local foresty office (GPS-coordinates 39.353424,8.581946).
