Porto Torres with its 21.00 inhabitants is an important ferry harbor and a popular sea resort located in the north-western part of Sardinia. The town belongs to the province of Sassari and is about 20 km away from the provincial capital.
Porto Torres was founded by the Romans and was of a certain importance which is testified to some important archeological sites in the urban area. One main sight is the cathedral of San Gavino built in the 11th century.
In the north-west of Porto Torres is situated the Asinara island, in former time a high-security prison for Mafia bosses and nowadays a national park. This fascinating landscape gives haven to bunnies, mouflons and the almost extincted little white donkeys.
