Buggerru in brief – tourist information and more

The small town Buggerru with approx. 1.000 inhabitants is situated in the south-west of Sardinia and makes part of ther Sulcis-Iglesiente region. The region is rich in coal, sulphur, barium, zinc, lead and silver, and the formerly fishing village Buggerru grew through mining in the first half of the last century. Nowadays, it offers all year round shops, markets, bars, restaurants, pharmacy, ATM, a well-known surf school and a marina with the possibility of boat charter.

The small town is situated sea-side and became in the last years a tourist destination for those who are looking for a holiday away from the hustle and bustle in a fascinating and wild-romantic landscape with kilometers of sandy beaches. It is also highly recommended for activity holidays in Sardinia.

What are the top attractions in Buggerru

The abandoned mining sites in the vicinity, near Buggerru the Galleria Henry and near Masua the sea harbour Porto Flavia, both witnesses of a past and monumental mining architecture, are surely worth a visit. Porto Flavia, which is named after the daughter of the engineer who designed the harbour, consists in two superimposed tunnels built in only two years inside the high cliffs in front of the Pan di Zucchero stack. The tunnel system was used to load faster and with less costs the steamships. The loading terminal was closed in the 1990s, when the mineral production ceased.

If you drive along the coast, you will find numerous ruins, remains of wells and old machines, all witnessing a once flourishing mining in the region.

In Fluminimaggiore, a few minutes from Buggerru, you can visit the ruins of the ancient Carthaginian-Roman Antas Temple.

By car you can reach easily the WWF Oasis of Scivu, located between Flumimaggiore and Arbus, a natural oasis with wide and high sandy dunes, in which the fascinating Mediterranean biodiversity is preserved and the Sardinian flora and fauna are to be protected.

The beaches near Buggerru

Buggerru is not only known for its mining past, but also for its long, beautiful sandy beaches. There is a short but wide sandy beach right at the Buggerru marina, which is particularly popular with surfers.

By car you can reach in some minutes the long and suggestive beaches of San Nicolao and Portixeddu, the beach of Capo Pecora and Piscinas and the wide dunes of Scivu, which belong to the WWF Park Oasis of Scivu.
