Chia in brief – tourist information and more
The well-known holiday resort Chia is situated in the south of Sardinia. It is well-known for its crystal clear sea water and its fine child-friendly sandy beaches. Chia offers many exclusive hotels and family-friendly residences, comfortable holiday homes and villas near the beach.
What are the top attractions to see in Chia
Chia is a small coastal village that belongs to the municipality of Domus de Maria, and wakes up from its sleeping beauty from May to October. There are supermarkets, bars and restaurants, and of course the stalls of the local farmers along the main road, where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables and sometimes extra virgin olive oil and house wine.
Chia is the ideal place for relaxing beach vacation and activity holidays in the off-season, especially for cycling tourism in Sardinia, all types of water sports, trekking and hikking. A half marathon is held regularly in spring, and thanks to constant winds in spring and autumn, it became one of the hotspots for surfers and kite-surfers.
We recommend to explore by car the fascinating and panoramic coastal road Costa del Sud from Chia to Teulada. Other interesting places to see in the region are Porto Pino, Sant’Anna Arresi, Giba and Tratalias, a village abandoned in the 1950s with its lovingly renovated borgo antico.
Pula about 20 km away from Chia, offers a charming and in summer pedestrian friendly center with many bars and restaurants. The shops offer traditional textiles and handicrafts and Sardinian food specialities like honey, Pane Carasau bread, salami, olive oil and the Bottarga, a dried and pressed mullet roe which gives a special and intense taste to pasta dishes, tomato salad or fresh ricotta cheese.
Near Pula and directly situated sea-side are the ruins of the ancient town of Nora with remarkable Roman mosaics from the 4th century and a good preserved Roman amphitheatre.
In Porto Columbu there is a small marina with the possibility of boat rental.
The beaches around Chia
The beautiful beaches of Chia, famous for their fine white sand, are lined up like pearls on a chain: Porticciolo and Sa Colonia near the Spanish watchtower Torre Spagnolo, Porto Campana, Cala del Morto, Su Giudeu and the Cala Cipolla bay are worth mentioning.
Other beautiful beaches you will find along the coastal road Costa del Sud: the Tuerredda beach with Caribbean-style white sand between the captivating promontories Capo Malfatano and Capo Spartivento and the Spiaggia di Piscinnì.
In summer months it is possible to rent umbrellas and sunbeds, and hire pedal boats on the beach. There are also kiosks that offer refreshing beverages, ice cream and snacks. Surf schools offers lessons for all ages and all levels.
