The best holiday destinations in west Sardinia
This area is the ideal destination for those seeking untouched landscapes, small, undiscovered towns and important archaeological sites. The west coast stretches from Bosa in the north to the Costa Verde in the south. Predominantly rural, it is characterised by green plains and proximity to the sea.
To discover the most beautiful sights, start in the historic Planargia region and visit the charming town of Bosa, which boasts a small harbour on the Temo River, colourful alleys, a lively centre and castle ruins that dominate the town.
Then, continue south to visit the towns of Montiferru, Cuglieri, Tresnuraghes, Santu Lussurgiu, Bonarcado and Seneghe. For swimming, we recommend the beautiful beaches of S’Archittu and Santa Caterina di Pittinuri. Continue your journey south to the Campidano Plain. Discover the beautiful Sinis Peninsula, where sea and history meet.
Beach lovers will enjoy the area around Cabras, which offers some of Sardinia’s most beautiful beaches: Is Arutas, which is known for its sand grains that resemble pure white rice.
Nearby, in San Giovanni di Sinis, you will find the archaeological site of Tharros, a Sardinian city founded by the Nuragic tribes and fortified during the Punic and Roman periods. It remained the capital of the Sardinian Judicates until 1050 AD, when it was relocated to the site of the present-day city of Oristano. In Sardinian, there is an expression: ‘De sa citade de Tharros, portant sa pedra a carro’, which literally means ‘From the city of Tharros, stones are transported in large quantities by cart’, as many buildings in Oristano were constructed from ancient Tharros stones.
Beyond the Gulf of Oristano lies the Marmilla hinterland and the Giara di Gesturi plateau, which is famous for its small horses — the last wild horses in Europe.
If you enjoy historical routes, be sure to visit the towns of Ales and Ghilarza, where you can explore the birthplace of Antonio Gramsci and visit his museum.
If you’re looking for wild and unspoilt landscapes, enjoy a stay on the Costa Verde. The beaches and surrounding nature are all exceptional, but if you only have time to see one place, make sure you visit the famous Piscinas beach with its golden sand dunes – it’s like a desert by the sea and truly magical!
