Arbus, which has almost 6,500 inhabitants, belongs to the province of Medio-Campidano and is located in the south-west of Sardinia, about 15 km in bee line from the sea.

In Arbus is a Sardinian Knife Museum with lots of information on the history and production of the coltello sardo, as the locations and its artisans are known throughout Sardinia for their fine work. The heaviest knife in the world, which is also mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records, is on display in the museum: it is 16 ft long and has a weight of approx. 45 stone.

The best beaches around Arbus

The coastline which includes the fabulous Costa Verde (Green Coast) is about 30 miles long and confined in the north by Capo Frasca and in the south by Capo Pecora. The region is famous for its wide sandy dunes covered by the typical Mediterranean vegetation, like the spectacular dunes of Piscinas.

The beaches of Marina di Arbus, Piscinas, Funtanazza and Scivu can be reached on a winding and panoramic roads, and are around 15 miles away from Arbus.

What can you do in Arbus and surroundings

Because of its position between the mountains and the sea, the area of Arbus offers the possibility to get in touch with the “real” and less touristy Sardinian traditions and to do some activity holidays in Sardinia, like hiking the amazing sand dunes and cycling along the coast line, especially in off-season, when the tmperatures are less high.

Arbus is also a nice destination for motorcycle tourism in Sardinia, with a lot of winding roads that curls through the mountains down to the sea.

In the past, the region around Arbus and Guspini was one of the most important mining districts for lead and zinc in Sardinia. Testimonies of this past are old shafts, rusty tracks, and abandoned mines. Today it is possible to visit some of these mines with guided tours. After restoration, these fascinating sites of industrial archeology are worth a visit, giving an insight not only in the technical devolopments of this period, but testimony the heavy working conditions of the miners, full of prevation. The main sights are Montevecchio and Ingurtosu, both closed in the 1970s.
