Bosa in brief – tourist information and more

The picturesque city of Bosa, which has about 8000 inhabitants, is located on the Temo river, about 50 km south of Alghero, on the western coast of Sardinia.

What are the top attractions to see in Bosa

Bosa is a pretty town with colorful buildings and houses and is located on the banks of the Temo river, among other things the only partially navigable river in Sardinia.

The ruins of the 12th century Castello Malaspina dominate the city: the castle with its high walls, which can also be reached on foot in a partially steep climb, offers a panoramic view over the city, the Temo and the sparkling sea, which is located about 2 miles in the west.

The narrow streets and the squares of the historic center, the esplanade along the river Temo lined with palm trees and the characteristic bridge Ponte Vecchio invite to take a stroll. There are many bars, cafes and restaurants to take a rest. At the end of the center’s main street, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, one of the sights of Bosa.

On the other side of the Temo, are the buildings of the old tannery. Due to the abundance of water, the Bosa became an important center for the processing of leather and fur, but the tannery had to close the gates in the late 1960s. Nowadays one can visit there the interesting tannery museum, the Museo delle Conce, where machinery, tools and products are exhibited, and much information concerning the leather processing and its history in Bosa is provided.

The Museo Deriu is located in Corso Vittorio Manuele: it is a house of the 19th century where people of Bosa’s rich upper class lived. The furniture of the single rooms is well preserved and gives an insight into the lifestyle of the era.

Wine is also grown around Bosa. Very famous, and not only in Sardinia, is the Malvasia dessert wine. In Bosa there is the winery Cantina Columbu, where you can taste this sweet and delicate quality wine, labeled with the classification DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which means in English: Denomination of Controlled Origin).

Also worth a visit the church of San Pietro Extramuros from 1073, about 2 miles upstream from Bosa center.

The beaches of Bosa

About nearly 2 miles from Bosa, directly on the sea and at the estuary of the Temo river, is located Bosa Marina with its sand beach. Even on windy days, this beach is sheltered and one of the preferred of families with children. A Spanish watchtower is located on the Isola Rossa next to the beach.

Other beaches from north to south are Cumpoltittu, Sa Rocco Lada, S’Abba Drucche, Cala Rapana, Turas beach and in Porto Alabe the Noesala and Porto Alabe beaches.

Best things to do in Bosa and surroundings

In summer, the Trenino Verde (en. Little Green Tree), a narrow gauge railway, departs from Bosa Marina and arrives, passing along the coast, in Tresnuraghes and in Macomer. The route is approximately 30 miles and has a trip duration of 1h 50 ‘.

We recommend to drive the panoramic road from Bosa to Alghero, particularly appreciated by motorcyclists in Sardinia. This itinerary winds through a varied landscape, covered with a dense Mediterranean scrub, and offers splendid sea views in every season.
