Nature parks in Sardinia: Visit the Giara di Gesturi with its famous wild horses

Nestled in the fertile Marmilla region, north of Cagliari, lies the Giara di Gesturi Nature Park, a fascinating basalt plateau of volcanic origin that was formed by the forces of nature millions of years ago. This vast expanse of lava rock, interrupted by deep depressions known as ‘Paulis’, is home to a unique ecosystem where flora and fauna, including the famous Giara horses (Cavallini della Giara di Gesturi), have found their ideal habitat. You can admire these small wild horses, which used to live in herds all over the island, among cork oaks, olive trees and the fragrant Mediterranean scrub.

But the Giara is not just a natural jewel: the numerous prehistoric rock tombs, also known as Domus de Janas, and the remains of Nuragic villages bear witness to a very ancient human presence and turn this plateau into an open-air museum of Sardinian history. At the foot of Sa Jara Manna lies one of the island’s most famous nuragic sites, Su Nuraxi of Barumini, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is definitely worth a visit

One park and many ways to discover it

The Giara Park offers a variety of options for nature and adventure lovers. It is possible to visit the park on your own for free, but we recommend taking part in guided tours with local experts who will take you to the most hidden corners of the park and tell you about its history, geology and legends. Of course, these guides also know the places where you can spot the wild horses and perhaps also wild boars, hares, ducks and foxes.

The small wild horses, which are unique in the world due to their genetic and physical characteristics, are the descendants of ancient horse breeds from the Middle Ages that lived in the wild in Sardinia and are known as the ‘last wild horses of Europe’. Observing them in their natural habitat is certainly an unforgettable experience.

The most classic way to explore this fascinating corner of Sardinia is certainly on foot. Numerous paths of varying length and difficulty wind their way through the forests, the expanses of lava rock and the characteristic ‘paulis’. These paths are ideal for immersing yourself in unspoilt nature and admiring the local flora and fauna up close.

If you prefer something a little more ‘sporty’, you can also explore the park by bike. Numerous unpaved cycle paths lead into the heart of the plateau and offer breathtaking views, from Gennargentu to Campidano and from the Marmilla far out to sea. These tours are even suitable for children, as the paths are easy and flat.

If you enjoy horse riding or have some experience with horses, then a horse ride is definitely worthwhile: under expert guidance, you can ride along paths across the fascinating plateau and really immerse yourself in the unique natural surroundings.

The Giara is a true paradise for birdwatchers. Numerous species of birds of prey and migratory birds nest and rest in this area, offering observers a unique spectacle.

How to reach the Giara Park

The Giara Park extends over the municipalities of Genoni, Gesturi, Tuili and Setzu. The main entrances are located in the municipalities of Tuili and Gesturi. From both, the plateau can be easily reached by car and parked at the appropriate points. From here, you can continue on foot along the many well-signposted paths that lead into the park.

The Giara Park is located about 60 kilometres north of Cagliari, 40 kilometres east of Oristano and 130 kilometres from Alghero. These distances may vary slightly depending on the exact starting point. There are public transport links, but these are infrequent and take longer, so we recommend using your own car or hiring one so that you can spend as much time as you need in this beautiful place.
