Beach holiday in Sardinia with the dog: the best beaches for our 4-legged friends

Like every year, it’s time for the holidays, and while planning, you think of the moment when you will be lying on the beach drinking your frozen cocktail and enjoying the sun. Well, if you own a dog, you won’t be the only one dreaming. Races on miles-long beaches, small and big waves to bark at from the shore, frisbees to catch on the fly always ending up on top of a bather’s towel and holes dug frantically in the sand; yes, the moment you announced to your 4-legged friend that this year he was going on holiday to the sea, these were his dreams with his eyes open (and closed!). In this article, you will find all the advice you need to spend a pet-friendly holiday in Sardinia in the name of relaxation and fun.

Beach equipped for dogs: what to look for

When it comes to beaches for dogs, it is first of all necessary to make a small distinction between equipped and non-equipped beaches.

In the free beaches, if there is not an explicit prohibition by the municipality, it is possible to access with your four-legged friend but aware of the fact that it is a non-equipped area. So remember to bring everything you need, including bowls with water and croquettes, a leash, muzzle (even if not worn), hygienic bags, and his favorite toys.

On the equipped beaches, on the other hand, you will find various services that will make your day much easier and “lighter”. The best-equipped offer: bowls for water and food, fountains, showers, and dedicated toilets, the presence of a veterinarian on site, shaded areas for the hottest hours, play areas and training with agility tools, and the possibility of being followed by a professional trainer, dog sitting services, cushions, and beds, especially for dogs.

Some tips you should keep in mind during your beach day with Fido are:

  • Always make sure he has drunk enough and is not thirsty.
  • Make sure he doesn’t get too much sun, especially during the hottest hours. As for us, it would be better if you spread a protective cream on the most vulnerable areas such as the stomach and ears.
  • Not all dogs love water. There are also the “wimpy” ones, don’t force him to take a bath if he doesn’t want to.
  • If, on the other hand, he is a skilled swimmer, be careful if he swims and is near rocks and stones.
  • Whatever he does, remember to reward him when he behaves well and follows your directions. This is always a valid suggestion but especially when you find yourself in non-routine situations such as holidays.

Dog beach in Cagliari and its province

As for pet-friendly beaches, southern Sardinia offers both equipped and non-equipped beaches. In Cagliari, in the famous Poetto beach, just go near the seventh stop to find yourself in front of a beach of six thousand square meters where your four-legged friend can run and swim. Not very equipped, it only offers a fountain where you can refresh yourself and give your pet a drink. Please remember that entry is allowed only if your dog has a microchip and health documentation certifying his good health.

In the vicinity of Cagliari, there is one of the best-equipped beaches in the area, the Tiliguerta Dog Beach, which overlooks the wonderful beach of Costa Rei. It is located inside the Tiliguerta Camping Village and offers its visitors bowls of water, floating toys, showers, snacks, and veterinary and dog-sitting services.

Also worth mentioning are the free beaches such as Bau Beach at Marghine Rosso in Quartu Sant’Elena, the dog beach of Porto Corallo-Prumari in Villaputzu, and the beach in the locality of Su Loi in Capoterra.

Beaches for dogs in Olbia and surroundings

The northern coast is the best equipped when it comes to beaches for dogs. To Olbia, there are two very nice free beaches, Le Saline and Cala Razza di Juncu.

Among the best-equipped ones, the Doggie Beach of Punta Nera in Palau certainly deserves to be mentioned, open for several years, offering its four-legged visitors various locations equipped with umbrellas, water bowls, kits with shovels and hygienic bags, and a freshwater tank for a refresher before leaving.

If, on the other hand, your dog has more of a VIP soul and loves the international jet set, we recommend the beautiful free beaches of the Costa Smeralda: Lu Postu, La Sciumara, and Poltu Liccia. All 3 with free admission. If, on the other hand, you love the area of the island of La Maddalena, you will find the beach of Porto Palma, precisely in Caprera. Admission is free and the services offered include the delivery of a kit which includes: a bowl, spade, toilet bags, and umbrella. Another noteworthy pet-friendly beach in northern Sardinia is the Baia delle Mimose in Badesi.

Where to sleep for your holiday with the dog in northern Sardinia

At the beach with the dog: suitable beaches near Alghero and on the west coast

Although it is no longer equipped with beaches that provide many services for animals, Alghero is one of the favorite destinations of tourists visiting Sardinia. If you too love this beautiful town with Spanish influences, we suggest you visit the beaches of Maria Pia and Porto Ferro. These are stupendous unequipped coasts with free access and delimited by a small fence. Your dog will love running around on the sand and diving into an expanse of water that changes its colors from turquoise blue to the most intense blue.

Still, in the Sassari area, we recommend the Farrizza Dog Beach in Porto Torres. Being a small beach, it does not allow access to more than 5 or 6 dogs at a time, and all of them must be duly registered in the canine registry and have a health certificate of good health. This is also an area without services, so you will take care of bringing everything you need for your four-legged friend.

Other pet-friendly beaches in the area are the Dog Beach in Fiume Santo and the beach for dogs at the descent to the sea n.4 in Sorso. The latter, once equipped with all the necessary services, is still today a wonderful free beach with free access for your travel companion.

Descending the coast, on the other hand, there is the Bao Beach of Torregrande, in the municipality of Oristano, and the area delimited by the large Sabbie D’Oro beach, between Torre dei Corsari and Pistis, in the wonderful Costa Verde.

With the dog in Sardinia: because it is the right destination for you

In recent years, in Italy, the attention for those traveling with their dog has grown, and all the regions have tried to offer increasingly relaxing and comfortable holidays, also to four-legged travelers.

Speaking of it, Sardinia is no exception. From north to south, the island is dotted with dog beaches of all kinds: free, private, equipped, and unequipped; reaching about 35.

Furthermore, if you love walks at dusk by the sea, thanks to a bathing ordinance of the Sardinia Region, every day and on all beaches, you can stay with your dog from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am. We are sure that your trusted friend will love enjoying a pizza in front of a wonderful sunset over the sea.

Choosing Sardinia for one pet-friendly vacation means taking advantage of all the services necessary for the success of your trip to one of the most beautiful seaside areas in Italy. But Sardinia is not only sea. The area is also characterized by many natural and mountain areas where you can enjoy the clean air, play with your dog and meet different species of animals to make friends with, such as sheep, cows, and flamingos. Not to mention the typical Sardinian gastronomy, which could however become a problem. We’re sure the only time you and your dog may disagree is over who gets to eat the last piece of roast suckling pig!
