Discover the other Sardinia: Prehistoric nuraghe monuments and the most beautiful caves and caverns in Sardinia
Sardinia, the popular holiday island in the Mediterranean, offers not only long sandy beaches and beautiful sea water, but in addition to the well-known hospitality of the Sardinians and the culinary specialities an unique history with ancient megalithic edifice, like the imposing tower monuments of the so-called nuraghic civilization, built between 1900 and 730 B.C. Whether they were constructed as fortifications or as places of worship and burial is still under discussion.
Today, more than 7,000 Nuragic buildings are known, most of them in the north west and inland of Sardinia.
The most well-known is certainly the Nuraghe Su Nuraxi at Barumi, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, further well-preserved nuraghi are Albucciu near Arzachena, Palmavera near Alghero, Succuronis near Macomer, Losa near Abbasanta, Santu Antine near Torralba and Is Paras near Isili.
If you want to make a break from the sea life than you should explore the beautiful caves and caverns of Sardinia.
A descent into the underground is not only fascinating for adults and children but with air temperatures around 60 degrees Fahrenheit (16 Celsius) especially in summer very refreshing.
We recommend to wear a sweater and perhaps long trousers and trainers or walking boots because during your exploration you will be walking on uneven and wet ground.
The most beautiful stalactite caves of Sardinia are: the Neptune Grotto near Alghero (on foot or by boat), the cave of Ispinigoli near Dorgali, the famous Grotta del Bue Marino near Cala Gonone (only by boat), the Grotta del Fico in Ogliastra and the grotto Su Marmuri near Ulassai, in the south-west the Grotta Is Zuddas near Santadi, the cave Su Mannau near Flumimaggiore, the cave San Giovanni near Domusnovas (in former times one could pass them by car!) and last but not least the cave of Santa Barbara near Iglesias, discovered by miners fortuitously.
